When performing a major renovation around the house, it’s really tempting for homeowners looking to save money to attempt to do it themselves.  Of course, skill levels are different for everyone, and if it’s a simple appliance install, it should be OK for most of us to handle without having to hire any help.  But when you get into bigger jobs like window replacement, is it really better to call in the professionals?  Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of both options.

A simple window replacement where you’re just removing the old and installing the new can be done by most do-it-yourself homeowners, but that doesn’t mean it will be done well. Improper installation can mean drafts, leaks and instability.

When a window replacement is a more complicated proposition – such as if you’re switching a window for a door or cutting drywall – you need to have an experienced contractor to handle the job since this option could end up saving you money in the long run.

Another time you should have an experienced contractor for your window replacement is when your window is out of reach and difficult to access, such as a window on the outside of an inaccessible top floor.  You should also have window replacement done by a professional when it’s a special size or shape of window that requires a particular installation method. 

Overall, any window replacement should probably be handled by the professionals; you’ll save time, money and get the job done right the first time.
