6 Common Types of Roofing Materials

1. Clay Tile: Clay is an extremely long lasting, environmentally friendly roofing material that has been used for centuries.  In the US, it is most commonly used in the Southwest, as it has a great ability to reflect, not absorb, the sun’s rays.  On the downside, it is very expensive and heavy, often needing additional reinforcement for support.

2. Slate Tile:  Slate is a beautiful, durable, and low-maintenance roofing option.  It has a very long life and is completely fireproof.  Like some other natural materials, however, it is very heavy and expensive. 

3. Concrete Tile:  Concrete tile or fiber-reinforced tile is often touted as the low-cost alternative to clay tile. Though it may not be quite as long-lasting as clay, it is a much lighter and more durable material and can be used in a variety of climates.

4. Metal: Though not a common choice for roofing, particularly for residential roofs, metal is low-weight, fire-retardant, and very durable and long-lasting.

5. Wood Shingles and Shakes: Wood roofing has a classic, natural look and provides great insulation. But it can be a fire hazard and requires much more maintenance than other types of roofing.

6. Asphalt Shingles:  By far the most common roofing material, asphalt shingles are cheap, easy to install, and fire-retardant. They offer a variety of colors and styles and can be made to mimic the look of more expensive roofing materials.
