5 Quick Tips to Maintain the Roofing of Your Home During the Rainy Season

As cold fronts continue to move along the east coast and into the North Carolina area, we’re bunkering down for what is predicted to be a very wet few months to kick off 2013.  Unfortunately, many homeowners take the integrity of their roof for granted and assume as long as they don’t have any visible leaks that there’s nothing to worry about.  This couldn’t be further from the truth, since bigger problems can be solved before they get out of control by performing some simple preventative maintenance.  Here are 5 quick tips to ensure you don’t find yourself running out to the store to purchase extra buckets for your leaky roof.

1. Roofing should be checked at least once a year for holes, loose screws and other damage caused by extreme weather.  In addition, roofing should be checked after every major storm for possible damage.
2. Gutters of your roofing system should be clean, free of leaves and other objects, and also be clear of hanging branches that could allow animals on top of your home.
3. Check inside the attic, if you can, for possible water entry points by looking for paint cracks or damp spots in the ceiling.
4. Be sure to use an elastomeric sealant for roofing repair since it doesn’t crack or melt and can also withstand the extreme UV rays of the sun.
5. Perform a full roofing repaint once every two to three years, and hire a professional to make sure the job gets done right.  Reapplying sealants and replacing any damaged sections is also the best idea at this time.
